So many of you started this New Year under tough conditions, I just had to thank you and express how proud I am of all of you.

While the snow of early January was paralyzing schools, airports and traffic, the dedicated nurses, techs and doctors of DRH made it to the hospital and performed under extreme conditions.  Thank you for such a heroic effort.  You are the reason Detroit Receiving would be a “top hospital” under any criteria.

I want to especially congratulate the Burn Center and the ED. Our Marketing team posted an announcement of our re-verified status as an American Burn Association Verified Burn Center on Facebook in mid-January.  There are only 62 verified burn centers in the US, and ours and Children’s is the oldest and largest in Michigan.  Within 18 hours, there were more than 400 views, 25 likes and this message from a burn patient:

”As a patient and consumer I APPRECIATE all of your hard work and dedication in the skills you participate in.  As you can see, I am a burn survivor who had a 40% burn to my hand and forearm.  I was in your care for 10 days and the surgery was a four-hour lapse.   Your skills and technique brought me to where I am today.  I also feel as if I was saved, thank you for being who you are!! If I had a camera I would share the end result, but it looks better and better everyday and the burn happened March 18, 2012.  I am forever in debt to you and No, I will NOT be a stranger….You saved my life!” - Nathan Douglas Bawks

I would also like to thank the many DRH staff who have completed their training as Certified Assistance Counselors (CACs) to help the uninsured sign up for health insurance.  We know these DRH staff will do a great service to the community as the first-timers navigate the overwhelming choices they will have to make to become insured.  Please be aware that if you have friends, family or neighbors who need help getting their insurance through the Affordable Care Act, our CACs are prepared to meet with them in a home, a coffee shop or library room to tell them about it and help them understand their choices.  If you would like a CAC to talk to your group, call 1-888-DMC-2500 and the CallCenter will help you with the logistics. You can also visit www.DMC.org/PathToHealth.

I know how hard you all worked during the visit of the Polar Vortex.  Thank you for all you do, because you do it so well and so often.

Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Iris A. Taylor, PhD, RN
